This regulation, § 13:35-4A.10, outlines the authorized personnel who can administer moderate sedation in an office setting:
- A practitioner with privileges from a hospital or the Board, who completes regular continuing medical education in anesthesia services.
- A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) under the supervision of a qualified physician.
- A registered nurse or physician assistant, trained in anesthesia, can administer supplemental doses of moderate sedation under the direction of a qualified physician.
Patients under moderate sedation must be monitored by a qualified physician, CRNA, or registered nurse/physician assistant with monitoring device expertise. The person monitoring should not be the one performing the surgery or procedure.
If a CRNA is administering sedation or a registered nurse/physician assistant is monitoring, the supervising physician must be physically present and can concurrently provide patient care.
Additionally, an advanced cardiac life support-trained healthcare professional must be present when patients are receiving or recovering from moderate sedation.
